HYDERABAD: Kishan Reddy, the Union Minister and Telangana BJP president announced on Monday that if his party were to take power in the state, Hyderabad would be renamed 'Bhagyanagar'. He emphasized the precedent set by the renaming of cities like Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta. Reddy asserted that there was no necessity to retain the name 'Hyderabad', questioning the relevance of 'Hyder' in today's context and proposing the alteration to 'Bhagyanagar' under BJP governance.
He argued that the BJP didn't rename Madras to Chennai; instead, it was done by the DMK government. Reddy highlighted that various cities such as Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata had undergone name changes, indicating that there should be no issue with transforming Hyderabad into Bhagyanagar. Reddy emphasized a shift away from what he referred to as a subservient mindset and suggested a comprehensive alteration if the BJP assumed power.
Reddy stated that the BJP would seek counsel from intellectuals regarding these name changes. Bhagyanagar, he noted, translates to 'city of fortunes'. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had previously advocated for transforming Hyderabad into 'Bhagyanagar' during his electoral rallies in Telangana. Adityanath also proposed reinstating Mahabubnagar as Palamuru, aiming to alter the destiny and identity of these places for the better.
