Kolkata: The rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, has deeply shocked the nation, sparking widespread protests demanding strict punishment for the accused. Amid this unrest, another disturbing incident has emerged from a government hospital in Birbhum district, where a nurse on duty was allegedly molested by a patient.
The incident occurred while the nurse was administering a drip to a patient who had been brought in on a stretcher with a high fever. According to the nurse’s complaint, the patient inappropriately touched her and used offensive language. Following the complaint, the hospital administration promptly contacted the police, leading to the arrest of the accused. The formal complaint has been lodged at the Ilambazar police station, and an investigation is now underway.
The nurse, recalling the traumatic experience, expressed her distress, stating, "During the night shift, a male patient with a fever was brought in. While I was preparing to administer the drip as per the doctors' instructions, he misbehaved by touching me and using abusive language. Working here feels unsafe due to the lack of security."
Dr. Masidul Hasan, who was on duty at the time, provided further details, saying, "Around 8:30 PM, a patient named Abbas Uddin from Chotochak village arrived with a fever. He began misbehaving almost immediately. After some examination, we advised administering injections and IV fluids. However, when the nurse attempted to put in the saline, the patient became violent and molested her. Despite our requests for cooperation from the patient’s family, the misbehavior continued. We have reported the incident to the police and the authorities, and if no action is taken, we may consider stopping work."
This incident comes just weeks after the tragic rape and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital, where the main accused, Sanjay Roy, was arrested the day after the crime. The handling of the case by the Kolkata Police and the hospital administration faced significant criticism, and the investigation has now been taken over by the CBI.
