MUMBAI: On Tuesday, July 16, more than 25,000 job seekers gathered in Mumbai for walk-in interviews conducted by Air India Airport Services. The company had announced 2,216 handyman job vacancies, which led to an overwhelming turnout and almost caused a stampede.

The interviews were held at Air India's recruitment office in Kalina, Mumbai. The Handyman role involves various repair and maintenance tasks.

Due to the massive crowd, recruiters had to ask applicants to leave their resumes and return home to avoid chaos. They assured the applicants that all resumes would be reviewed, and eligible candidates would be contacted for further steps.

The handyman job requires significant physical effort, including heavy lifting and operational tasks. The position offers a monthly salary between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000, with overtime allowing potential earnings above Rs 30,000. While educational qualifications are flexible, the job demands physical strength and readiness for rigorous work.

George Abram, general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, criticized the recruitment process. "People came for thousands of vacancies. They brought demand drafts, but we told them not to pay anything yet and that they would be called in later," Abram told the Times of India.

The overwhelming response highlighted the intense competition for jobs and raised concerns about organizing large recruitment events.
