BANGALORE: Oommen Chandy, a veteran Congress leader and the former Chief Minister of Kerala, breathed his last in Bangalore after a prolonged illness. At the age of 79, he bid farewell to the world. Chandy had been receiving medical treatment in Bangalore  for the past few months. His son, Chandy Oommen, took to Facebook to share the heartbreaking news, stating, "Appa has passed away."

Oommen Chandy, a prominent figure in Kerala's political landscape, had the honor of serving as the Chief Minister of Kerala twice in his illustrious career. Over the past year, he sought medical care at esteemed institutions such as Berlin's Charite Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram's NIMS Medicity, and Bangalore 's Health Care Global Enterprises. His commitment to the welfare and progress of Kerala was deeply admired by his colleagues and constituents alike.

The news of his passing was met with great sadness, and Kerala Congress took to Twitter to express their condolences, stating, "We mourn the loss of former Kerala CM and Congress stalwart Shri Oommen Chandy. He was a champion of development, democracy, and secularism." Chandy's contributions to the state and his unwavering dedication to its growth will be remembered and cherished.

Oommen Chandy's political journey spanned over five decades, and in 2022, he achieved a significant milestone by becoming the longest-serving member of the Kerala Assembly. With his home constituency of Puthupally as his stronghold, he faithfully represented the people for an impressive 18,728 days. Alongside his two tenures as Kerala Chief Minister, Chandy served as a minister in various cabinets and held the esteemed position of Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly on four separate occasions.
