The Department of Telecom, along with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and private telecom operators, is ramping up efforts to tackle spam and unsolicited commercial communication. These initiatives include artificial intelligence (AI)-driven spam detection by Airtel and blockchain technology for spam control by Vodafone Idea. Authorities report that over one crore fraudulent mobile connections have been disconnected, with new regulations aimed at tracing messages and blocking non-whitelisted web links.
In a recent collaboration, Trai and the Department of Telecom are targeting spammers and blocking suspicious numbers. They are also engaging with representatives from telecom companies to discuss vigilance and implement new rules to combat unwanted communications.
Airtel has introduced an AI-based tool designed to detect spam and alert customers, while Vodafone Idea is employing blockchain technology to enhance their SMS spam control system.
Trai and the Department of Telecom revealed that they have disconnected over one crore fraudulent mobile connections and blocked approximately 2.27 lakh mobile handsets involved in cybercrime and financial fraud. In August, Trai urged mobile operators to disconnect resources used for bulk spam calls, warning that such entities could face a blacklist of up to two years.
Starting October 1, telecom companies are required to verify SMS transmissions that include non-whitelisted web links, a measure intended to minimize the misuse of SMS headers and templates. Furthermore, from November 1, Trai will mandate that all telecom operators ensure the traceability of messages from the sender to the receiver.
Vodafone Idea is preparing to launch a URL whitelisting platform soon. The company emphasized its commitment to working alongside Trai, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), and other telecom operators to enforce regulations against unsolicited commercial communication, with the goal of significantly reducing spam calls from unregistered telemarketers.
