Mumbai: The Mumbai wing of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has dismantled an interstate drug syndicate operating in Maharashtra, seizing over 160 kg of cough syrup and more than 32,000 tablets of banned narcotic drugs. During the operation, the NCB arrested at least one person. Based on intelligence input, the NCB launched the operation, initially seizing 12,400 Alprazolam tablets and 169.7 kg of Codeine syrup from a storage location in Panvel. Subsequent searches led to the discovery of an additional 9,600 Alprazolam and 10,380 Nitrazepam tablets from a house in Thane's Mumbra.
The NCB suspects that the narcotic drugs were sourced illicitly from other states through inland parcels. The NCB received information about a syndicate in Thane involved in procuring illicitly diverted pharmaceutical drugs and distributing them in Mumbai and nearby areas. Intelligence networks were activated to gather more details about the syndicate, and a courier line misused for the transportation of narcotic drugs was identified. On Saturday, May 4, the NCB intercepted TM Shafi, who was tasked with collecting the drug consignment. Upon searching Shafi, the drugs were recovered.
Following the operation, the NCB seized all illicitly procured contraband and the vehicles used by Shafi. During questioning, the NCB recovered incriminating data, which is currently under investigation. The NCB is conducting further investigation into the case.
