Mumbai's Dahi Handi celebrations saw over 40 participants, known as Govindas, sustain injuries during the festivities, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials. The injured were taken to various government and private hospitals for treatment.
The Dahi Handi festival, celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, involves forming multi-tiered human pyramids to break a pot of curd, symbolizing Krishna's love for the dairy product. The event re-enacts Krishna's playful and innocent childhood.
As per BMC updates, eight Govindas were admitted to different hospitals. Additionally, 26 received treatment at outpatient departments (OPDs), while seven were treated and discharged.
The injured were distributed among several hospitals as follows:
The BMC is working to ensure all injured Govindas receive the necessary medical attention. The city has been experiencing light to moderate rains since the morning, which has lowered temperatures. Various Govinda groups, dressed in vibrant outfits, attempted to build nine-tier human pyramids across Mumbai, using trucks, tempos, buses, and two-wheelers to transport participants.
To ensure safety and order during the festival, Mumbai Police have increased their presence. Over 11,000 officers have been deployed, including senior police officials, to oversee the celebrations and maintain law and order.
