Indore: More than 1,000 Pakistan refugees living in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, who have been living for a long time, are now gaining momentum in getting Indian citizenship. This had stopped during the corona transition period of about 14 months. Now, the process has been expedited. More than 30 refugees have been granted Indian citizenship in a month. The number may be more than 50 after this month.
Recently, Minister-in-charge Narottam Mishra had granted Indian citizenship to six Pakistan refugees living in Madhya Pradesh and assured early citizenship in the case of others. However, the process was intensified in Indore as its already infection subsided. At present, more than 1,000 Pakistani refugees are living in the district, while more than 2,000 people have been granted citizenship in different rounds in the last 7 years. In the case of those who are here at present, police verification was delayed, and then the matter was cooled down due to a corona infection.
Many of these Pakistani refugees have been in the past 25 years. They have reached Madhya Pradesh from Sindh province of Pakistan between 1988 and 2005 and are to get Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). ADM Pawan Jain said that it took time to grant citizenship due to infection, lockdown as it also takes time for embassy NOC, reports of concerned intelligence agencies, police verification, etc. The process has now been intensified by the administration. Soon others will also get Indian citizenship.
