In a fervent move, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader, MK Stalin, has initiated a signature campaign in protest against the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination. The campaign, which aims to gather 5 million signatures within a span of 50 days from individuals across the state, serves as a powerful symbol of the region's staunch opposition to NEET.
Stalin's vociferous opposition to the NEET examination has been ongoing for several months. He has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of "politicizing" the examination, and the DMK vehemently contends that NEET is inimical to the principles of social justice. The party argues that the exam disproportionately favors urban students and those with access to coaching centers.
This latest protest by the ruling party in Tamil Nadu follows a significant development in the NEET controversy. On September 20 of this year, the Ministry of Health directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to reduce the cutoff percentile for qualifying in NEET PG 2023 to "zero" across all categories.
Should the DMK succeed in gathering the desired number of signatures in their crusade against the NEET examination, they intend to present this resounding document of dissent to President Murmu.
The inauguration of this momentous event was led by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the secretary of the DMK youth wing and a government minister. Udhayanidhi expressed, "From NEET to NEP, the fascists have been endeavoring to strip us of our educational rights. We remain steadfast in our battle. I wish to forewarn the central government that if they persist in neglecting our demand to abolish NEET, Tamil Nadu will witness a mass protest reminiscent of the Jallikattu movement."
Furthermore, Udhayanidhi urged other political parties, including the AIADMK led by former Chief Minister Palaniswami, to actively participate in the signature campaign. He asserted, "The AIADMK claims to have severed ties with the BJP alliance to safeguard Tamil Nadu's interests. Thus, I extend an invitation to them to join our campaign as well."
