During their bilateral meeting, Modi and Meloni emphasized the need for the swift implementation of a migration and mobility agreement. Modi expressed gratitude for India's invitation to the G7 Summit and praised the arrangements. He stated, “Had a very good meeting with PM @GiorgiaMeloni. We discussed ways to further cement India-Italy relations in areas like commerce, energy, defence, telecom, and more. Our nations will work together in futuristic areas like biofuels, food processing, and critical minerals.”
The migration and mobility agreement, once in place, will facilitate the movement of professionals, skilled and semi-skilled workers, students, and researchers between India and Italy. Discussions on this agreement have been ongoing, and last December, the Union cabinet approved the proposal to sign and ratify it. Under this agreement, Indian students can gain initial professional experience in Italy for up to 12 months after completing their academic or vocational training.
PM Modi also had brief meetings with US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during the G7 Summit. Modi reaffirmed the commitment of India and the US to work together for global good. His interaction with Trudeau came amid strained relations between India and Canada following Trudeau's remarks about “credible allegations” linking Indian agents to the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia, last year.
