Rakesh A Sangma, the chief executive member (CEM) of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, has resigned in a major development in Meghalaya's Garo Hills area (GHADC).

CEM GHADC On Sunday night, Rakesh Sangma handed in his resignation letter to Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik. Albinush R Marak, the Deputy CEM of the GHADC in Meghalaya, is expected to replace Rakesh Sangma as the CEM. There has been widespread protests in Meghalaya's Garo Hills districts, calling for Rakesh Sangma's removal as GHADC CEM.

Over the last few weeks, Garo Hills-based pressure groups have been protesting Rakesh Sangma's selection as GHADC's CEM. Rakesh Sangma's identity as an indigenous Garo is 'doubtful,' according to the pressure groups.
