Shillong: A special court in Meghalaya has sentenced sacked policeman Nurul Islam to life imprisonment in a case. Along with this, a fine of eight lakh rupees has also been imposed on Nurul Islam. Islam was accused of raping two minor sisters. He was sacked after the incident came to light. On Monday (28 March 2022), the court sentenced in this case. The counsel for the aggrieved party appealed to the court to give at least life imprisonment to Nurul.

Judge FS Sangma of Elaan East Khasi Hills Court sentenced the accused. This incident of rape is of March 2013. At that time, Sub Inspector Nurul Islam was in-charge of the Ampati police station. This police station comes under the Garo Hills district. The father of the victim girls had alleged that Nurul raped their 13-year-old girl on March 13, 2013, after calling her to the police station. After this, on 31 March 2013, Nurul went to the victim's house and raped her 17-year-old sister at gunpoint. He had also threatened to implicate both the sisters in the fake case if they opened their mouths.

According to media reports, Nurul Islam was suspended in the year 2013 on the complaint of the father of the victim girls. Later he was arrested under the POCSO Act. There were also fierce demonstrations in Meghalaya against this incident. The mob had surrounded the police station, after which Nurul had to be shifted to another place. During this he escaped from police custody, later he was arrested again. A non-bailable warrant was also issued against Nurul. The NCPCR (National Commission for Protection of Children) had also sought an action taken report from the Meghalaya government in this matter. The NCPCR then accused Nurul of keeping Nurul in the residential quarters and giving him special treatment instead of keeping him in the lockup of the police station.
