Justice Manmohan officially took on the role of Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on Sunday, September 29. The 61-year-old judge was sworn in during a ceremony at Raj Niwas, the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena administered the oath, with prominent figures like Delhi Chief Minister Atishi Marlena in attendance.
Justice Manmohan had previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from November 9, 2023, after Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma was elevated to the Supreme Court.
Early Life and Education
Born in Delhi on December 17, 1962, Justice Manmohan hails from a distinguished family. His father, the late Jagmohan, was a well-known bureaucrat and politician who served as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. Justice Manmohan attended Modern School, Barakhamba Road, before earning his undergraduate degree in History from Hindu College, Delhi University. He later pursued his LL.B. from the Campus Law Centre at the University of Delhi.
Legal Career and Expertise
At the age of 25, Justice Manmohan began his legal career by enrolling as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi. He practiced primarily at the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court. Over the years, he gained expertise in a wide range of legal matters, including civil, criminal, constitutional, taxation, arbitration, trademark, and service litigation. He also served as Senior Panel Advocate for the Government of India in both the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court.
In January of last year, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court. Throughout his career, Justice Manmohan has handled several high-profile cases, including the Dabhol Power Company case, the Hyderabad Nizam’s Jewellery Trust matter, the Claridges Hotel dispute, and cases involving the Modi family and Gujarat Ambuja Cement’s sales tax.
Judicial Appointments
Justice Manmohan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, and became a Permanent Judge on December 17, 2009. He most recently served as Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court from November 9, 2023, until his formal appointment as Chief Justice.
