MANIPUR: In the wake of escalating student protests, Manipur University has postponed all postgraduate and undergraduate examinations until further notice. The unrest follows clashes between students and security forces near the Raj Bhavan, which resulted in injuries to over 55 individuals, including both students and security personnel.
On Wednesday, Manipur Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya left Imphal for Guwahati. Acharya, who holds the additional responsibility of overseeing Manipur, departed the state around 10 am. Officials did not provide additional details about his departure.
The students' protest intensified on Tuesday as they demanded the removal of the state's Director General of Police (DGP) and security advisor, accusing them of failing to manage the law and order situation effectively. Recent ethnic violence in Manipur saw the use of drones and rockets, further fueling the students' grievances.
Following the clash, Governor Acharya met with 11 student representatives late Tuesday night to discuss their concerns. Meanwhile, the Imphal valley remains under curfew with internet services suspended. Security has been heightened, with additional forces deployed and sensitive areas barricaded.
On Tuesday, security forces used tear gas to disperse students who defied prohibitory orders and attempted to breach the Raj Bhavan. The students also engaged in stone-throwing in various areas of Imphal and had camped overnight in the market areas of Khwairamband.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh has reached out to students from Imphal College and Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School, assuring them of the government's commitment to addressing their concerns. Singh emphasized the importance of student voices and pledged efforts to improve the situation in Manipur.
