Kolkata: In a fiery response to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids on state minister Jyotipriya Mallick, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP. She warned the central agency, as well as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), of potential police action if any harm were to befall the senior Trinamool leader.
Mamata Banerjee's show of support for Jyotipriya Mallick was notable, but it was accompanied by a conspicuous silence concerning Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra, who is currently under investigation by the Ethics Committee for her alleged involvement in a cash-for-query scandal.
The Trinamool Congress has distanced itself from the charges against Mahua Moitra, emphasizing that they would take an "appropriate decision" following the Ethics Committee's inquiry. However, the committee swiftly determined that the allegations against Moitra were "very serious" and warranted a full investigation. Mahua Moitra, known for her fierce criticism of the BJP, has been summoned to answer complaints by House colleague Nishikant Dubey on October 31.
This silence on Moitra's case has led the BJP to claim that she has been "abandoned" and that Mamata Banerjee's lack of response is an acknowledgment of her party leader's guilt.
While Amit Malviya, a senior BJP leader, asserted that it was not surprising that Mamata Banerjee had "abandoned" Mahua Moitra, Mamata herself lashed out at the ED, expressing her anger over the raids and the alleged tactics of central agencies. She stated, "If he dies, we will file an FIR (first information report) against CBI and ED. They torture people and ask them to take names of (other) people. This is atyachar (atrocious)."
Mamata Banerjee has often accused the BJP of using central agencies to target political rivals, particularly in the run-up to elections. She questioned the BJP's commitment to "development for all" (sabka sath, sabka vikas) and accused the party of seeking "destruction for all" (sabka sath, sabka satyanash).
The ongoing political tensions underscore the growing polarization in Indian politics, with the Trinamool Congress and the BJP engaging in fierce clashes as they prepare for key elections.
