Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated a new 'bow-string' arch bridge on Thursday, September 12, which connects the Coastal Road directly to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. This new bridge significantly reduces the travel time between Marine Drive and Bandra from about an hour to just 10 minutes, enhancing the overall commuting experience in Mumbai. The Coastal Road project, which costs approximately Rs.14,000 crore, aims to streamline traffic flow and improve connectivity.
A senior civic official stated that vehicles traveling northbound to Bandra from South Mumbai can now directly enter the sea link between 7 am and 11 pm. Southbound vehicles, however, will need to continue using the current routes until both sections of the Coastal Road are fully integrated with the sea link.
After the inauguration, Eknath Shinde said, “Previously, it took 45 minutes to an hour to travel from Marine Drive to Bandra. Now, the journey will be reduced to just 10 minutes. This project offers a comfortable and relaxing experience for the people of Mumbai and represents a significant advancement for the city.”
Shinde added, “This new route will reduce congestion, save time, cut fuel consumption, and lower pollution levels. Although we initially planned to open this span on September 15, we have completed it ahead of schedule, demonstrating our commitment.”
Additionally, the chief minister pledged that Mumbai will have pothole-free concrete roads within the next two years. “In the next two years, all roads in Mumbai will be made of concrete, and there will not be a single pothole. The city will be fully beautified,” he said.
