Mumbai: In response to heavy rainfall across Maharashtra, including Mumbai and the coastal Konkan region, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde issued a high alert on Sunday, urging officials to take necessary precautions.

Shinde emphasized that the State Disaster Response Force, local administration, civic bodies, and police should stay updated with weather forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and plan relief efforts accordingly. He advised surveying accident-prone areas, implementing flood control measures, and diverting traffic as needed.

Regular weather updates from the IMD should be communicated to citizens, Shinde added. In Andheri, heavy waterlogging led to road closures, highlighting the need for preparedness. Shinde instructed officials to maintain adequate stocks of food, medicine, and relief materials, and to establish temporary shelter camps for both people and animals.

The Mumbai Police, in a post on X, cautioned residents: "In view of the continuous and heavy rains in Mumbai, citizens are requested to avoid going to the coastal areas and move out of their houses only if necessary."

Flight Disruptions

Adverse weather conditions in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra have disrupted flight operations. Air India announced on social media: "Flights to and from Mumbai are getting affected due to heavy rains. Guests are advised to start early for the airport, as slow traffic and waterlogging may delay movement."

Vistara also reported a flight diversion: "Flight UK696 from Amritsar to Mumbai (ATQ-BOM) has been diverted to Ahmedabad (AMD) due to bad weather at Mumbai airport and is expected to arrive in Ahmedabad (AMD) at 1215 hours."

Weather Forecast

Meteorological forecasts predict a surge in heavy rainfall across various regions of India due to a well-marked low-pressure area over interior Odisha and adjoining Chhattisgarh. This atmospheric disturbance is expected to significantly affect West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Southeast Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh in the coming days.

From July 21 to 23, West Madhya Pradesh is anticipated to experience isolated extremely heavy rainfall, with East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha expected to see similar conditions on July 21. The weather department warned that this heavy rain could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in transportation and daily activities. Residents and local authorities are advised to prepare for potentially disruptive weather events and to remain vigilant.
