Maharashtra: In the wake of a distressing sexual assault case involving two fourth-grade girls at a school in Badlapur, Maharashtra, the situation has escalated with significant legal and political developments. Here are ten crucial updates on the case:

FIR Against School Authorities: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the school for not following the provisions of Section 19 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. This section requires authorities to report any sexual assault involving minors to the police. Statements from the victims and their parents have been documented.

Charges for Non-Compliance: The school is also facing charges under Section 21 of the POCSO Act, which stipulates penalties for failing to comply with Section 19. The SIT has emphasized that both victims and their families have provided their statements.

Court's Intervention: On August 22, the Bombay High Court took suo motu cognizance of the case, expressing grave concern over the sexual assault incident.

Court's Remarks: The Bombay High Court described the assault as "absolutely shocking" and stressed that there can be no compromise on the safety and security of young girls.

Protests and Political Response: The assault has sparked widespread outrage and protests across Maharashtra. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray has called for the withdrawal of cases against protesters involved.

Statewide Bandh: The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has announced a Maharashtra bandh for August 24 to emphasize the need for enhanced women’s safety. Vijay Wadettiwar, the opposition leader in the state assembly, confirmed that all MVA allies will participate.

Purpose of the Bandh: Thackeray has stated that the bandh aims to draw attention to women's safety issues and prompt government action.

School and Bank Operations: The government has not issued specific directives regarding school closures for August 24, so schools will operate normally unless they usually close on Saturdays. However, banks will be closed nationwide as it is the fourth Saturday of the month.

Accused’s Denial: The parents of the accused have asserted their son's innocence, claiming he has been falsely implicated. The accused, an attendant at the school, remains in police custody until August 26.

False Rumors: Authorities have registered a case against a 21-year-old Instagram influencer with over 500,000 followers for allegedly spreading false rumors about the victims. Misleading information about the victims' health and family circumstances has been widely circulated, prompting legal action.
