Guwahati: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Chhattisgarh faced a significant setback as more than 500 party workers collectively resigned and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. This mass exodus dealt a blow to the AAP's presence in the state and highlighted internal challenges within the party.
The departure of over 500 party workers came shortly after the resignation of AAP's Chhattisgarh unit chief Komal Hupendi and six other key members earlier in the month. Hupendi's departure and subsequent mass resignations underscored dissatisfaction with AAP's leadership and strategic decisions.
The defectors, in explaining their move to the BJP, pointed to disillusionment with AAP's central leadership. They expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development-oriented agenda and the BJP's track record in governance. Specific mentions were made of the establishment of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, which was seen as a significant step aligning with national sentiments.
The defection is also perceived as a reaction to AAP's handling of the 2023 assembly elections in Chhattisgarh. Despite initial plans to contest all 90 seats, AAP scaled down its efforts, fielding candidates in only 54 constituencies. The party's electoral performance fell short, failing to secure a single seat and garnering less than 1 per cent of the vote share.
The departure of Hupendi and the subsequent mass resignation highlighted a disconnect between the state unit and the central leadership of AAP. Dissatisfaction with the lack of support during elections and perceived apathy towards the concerns of the Chhattisgarh unit were key factors driving the defections.
This development poses a significant challenge for AAP in Chhattisgarh, as it not only faces a loss of cadre but also a dent in its image and credibility in the state's political landscape. The BJP, on the other hand, stands to gain from this influx of former AAP members, bolstering its cadre strength and potentially reshaping the political dynamics in Chhattisgarh.
