New Delhi: Lakshadweep, a pristine island territory, has seen a surge in interest following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit, according to tourism officer Imthias Mohammed TB. PM Modi's promotion of the island on social media has sparked inquiries from both domestic and international tourists, leading to a significant impact on tourism.
"We are witnessing a tremendous impact, receiving numerous inquiries," stated the Lakshadweep tourism officer, highlighting plans to enhance connectivity by deploying more cruise ships to the island.
Tourists like Aman Singh from Mumbai expressed long-standing interest in visiting Lakshadweep but were deterred by myths about the island. However, PM Modi's visit dispelled these myths, making it seem feasible and enticing to explore.
Sumit Anand also cited PM Modi's endorsement as a factor in choosing Lakshadweep as his next destination. In January 2024, PM Modi visited the Union Territory and indulged in snorkeling, showcasing the island's natural beauty on social media. His posts featured captivating images of white beaches, azure skies, and pristine ocean vistas.
Interestingly, PM Modi's visit had repercussions beyond tourism. Tensions between India and the Maldives escalated following derogatory remarks against India and PM Modi by three Maldivian officials after the PM's posts. Consequently, Indian tourists, who previously favored the Maldives, redirected their interest towards Lakshadweep.
Earlier remarks by India's External Affairs Minister, Subramaniam Jaishankar, underscored PM Modi's visit as a catalyst for global interest in Lakshadweep's tourism potential. Jaishankar emphasized that increased visitor footfall would not only boost Lakshadweep's economy but also provide visitors with a unique cultural experience.
Capitalizing on the growing interest, budget airline IndiGo announced a direct flight between Bengaluru and Agatti, the gateway to Lakshadweep. Currently, Alliance Air offers services to Agatti, with regional carrier FLY91 set to commence operations to the destination this month.
