Keraleeyam, the colossal extravaganza unveiled by the Left government to exhibit Kerala's progress, accomplishments, and cultural legacy to the global audience, kicked off with great enthusiasm on Wednesday, coinciding with the state's foundation day.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan marked the inauguration of this week-long festivity by kindling the traditional lamp, graced by distinguished figures representing various walks of life, including diplomats, cultural luminaries, industrialists, ministers, and elected officials. Featuring 42 venues, 25 seminars designed to shape the future of the New Kerala, exhibitions, culinary extravaganzas, and grand artistic performances, the festival embodies Kerala's unwavering commitment to secularism, unity, and its unique cultural heritage, as articulated by the government.

During his address, Vijayan expounded upon the state's notable achievements in diverse domains, such as the cultural renaissance, land reforms, people-centric planning, poverty alleviation, universal literacy, accessible public healthcare, housing provisions for all, and more. He encouraged people to take pride in their Keralite identity and revel in the spirit of the southern state, describing "Keraleeyam" as the "mahotsavam" (grand festival) of the state and a new chapter in its history.

He also announced that this event would become an annual tradition, coinciding with the state's formation day on November 1, where all Keralites can come together to share their joy and proclaim it to the world. Vijayan stressed the need to shed the hesitancy of not realizing Kerala's unique identity and showcase it on the global stage.

Elaborating on the significance of the program, he emphasized Kerala's remarkable achievements and untapped potential in various fields. He stated that "Keraleeyam" aims to exhibit this transformed Kerala, rapidly advancing towards a knowledge-based economy, to the world.

Vijayan added that the history of the state would be divided into "before" and "after" the celebration of Keraleeyam.

The event was graced by the presence of legendary actors, including Kamal Haasan, Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Shobhana, as well as diplomatic representatives from the UAE, South Korea, Norway, and Cuba, along with prominent industrialists and other dignitaries.

However, the opposition Congress boycotted the event, citing it as an extravagance at a time when the state is grappling with severe financial challenges. Local BJP members organized a protest march, criticizing the state government's alleged profligacy.

Earlier in the day, in his message on Kerala Foundation Day, Vijayan emphasized that modern Kerala was built through the organized struggles of the working class and peasantry, who unwaveringly upheld the ideals of the national and renaissance movements. He called upon everyone to commit to elevating Kerala to new heights and preserving its standing as a bastion of democracy and secularism.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah also extended their greetings on "Kerala Piravi," with Modi praising the people of Kerala for their diligence and rich cultural heritage, and expressing his hope for their continued success and inspiration to others.
