THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In response to protests from student organizations, including the CPM-affiliated SFI, over the alleged shortage of Plus-I seats in districts such as Malappuram, the Kerala government has scheduled discussions with the concerned groups tomorrow, on June 25.

General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced this initiative on the eve of the commencement of Plus-I classes in 2,076 schools across the state. Official data indicates that out of 4.21 lakh applicants for Plus-I seats, 3.16 lakh secured admission following the main allotment process. However, 77,997 students have not joined schools despite being allotted seats.

"Following the chief minister's directions, we have arranged a meeting with representatives of various student organizations on Tuesday to address the complaints of seat shortages, particularly in Malappuram. Any necessary actions will be based on the outcomes of these discussions," stated Sivankutty.

In Malappuram, out of 74,840 applicants, 49,906 have secured admission, while 10,897 students have not yet joined their allotted schools. The minister's office clarified that there are still 11,083 vacant seats in government and aided schools, in addition to 10,467 vacant seats in unaided schools within the district.

Sivankutty also highlighted that this year marks the first time in Kerala's history that Plus-I classes are starting in June. In previous years, classes began later, with the previous year's classes commencing on July 5 and those in 2022 starting on August 25.
