THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a historic move, Kerala made a significant statement on Tuesday, Augsut 8, by becoming the inaugural state in the nation to adopt a resolution opposing the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), solidifying its stance against the central government's plans.
The Kerala Legislative Assembly, in a unanimous decision, voiced a resounding demand that the central government desist from pursuing actions that could have sweeping repercussions for the entire nation's population.
The resolution, spearheaded by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, garnered unanimous backing from the Congress-led opposition. It emphasized the need for the central government to reconsider its unilateral and expedited intentions to introduce a uniform civil code, which is seen as potentially eroding the secular foundations of the Constitution.
Furthermore, the resolution highlighted the central government's lack of engagement in ideological discourse or pursuit of consensus before initiating this unilaterally-devised strategy.
"The evident disquiet among diverse segments of our society is palpable. Through this resolution, the Kerala Legislative Assembly underscores its resonance with these concerns. It emphasizes that a one-size-fits-all civil code could sow divisions, imperiling the harmonious coexistence of our people and undermining our national unity," stated the resolution.
Interestingly, it's worth noting that the Kerala Assembly previously made history on December 31, 2021, when it became the pioneering state assembly to pass a resolution demanding the repeal of the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)."
