Kochi: 22 people lost their lives after a houseboat capsized in Kerala's Malappuram district. There were 31 people in the boat when the incident happened on Sunday (May 7). The 9 surviving passengers have been admitted to a local hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Expressing grief over the incident, PM Narendra Modi and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar have announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the dependents of the deceased. CM Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered a judicial inquiry into the matter.

As per reports, the incident took place at Ottumpuram in Tanur area of ​​Malappuram district. According to Kerala government minister V Abdurrahman, the incident took place at around 7 pm on Sunday (May 7). At the time of the incident, the tension was in the middle of the river, which is being tried to bring it to the shore. Fire brigade, police and health department officials are engaged in relief and rescue operations. CM Pinarayi Vijayan has ordered a judicial inquiry to find out the reasons for the accident.

The video of this incident is also going viral on social media. In the viral video, security personnel are seen doing relief and rescue work around the boat submerged in the river at night. Navy's help is also being taken in relief and rescue operations. Indian Navy's Chetak helicopter has also been pressed into service. CM Vijayan has also announced financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased.
