Karnataka to Build 100+ Houses for Wayanad Landslide Victims, Actor Mohanlal Donates Rs. 3 Cr for Rehabilitation, And More

WAYANAD: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has pledged to construct over 100 houses for those affected by the devastating landslide in Wayanad. "I have assured CM Shri @pinarayivijayan of our support and announced that Karnataka will construct 100 houses for the victims. Together, we will rebuild and restore hope," Siddaramaiah shared on X.

Actor Mohanlal, who also serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army, visited the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad and committed Rs. 3 crore to the rehabilitation efforts. Wearing his army uniform, Mohanlal arrived at the Army camp in Meppadi, discussed the situation with officers, and toured affected sites including Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattom.

As rescue operations in Wayanad enter their fifth day, approximately 250 people remain missing, with the death toll surpassing 358.  The landslide has claimed around 308 lives, with 81 injured individuals receiving treatment in various hospitals.

Rescue Operations Nearing Completion: CM Vijayan

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that search and rescue operations in Wayanad are nearing their final stages. Identifying bodies and parts recovered from the Chaliyar River has been challenging. So far, 148 bodies have been handed over, with 67 yet to be identified. Local panchayats will conduct the last rites for these bodies.

Education Minister V. Sivankutty will visit the destroyed schools, and the education department will take necessary steps to ensure the continuity of education for affected children. The ongoing search efforts involve 1,419 personnel from the Fire Force, NDRF, Forest Department, Police, Indian Army, and volunteers from Tamil Nadu. K-9 squads and the Tamil Nadu Medical Team are also participating, using advanced equipment such as Human Rescue Radar and drone-based radar.

CPI-M MLAs and Public Donations

Chief Minister Vijayan and his wife, TK Kamala, have contributed Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 33,000 respectively to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF). CPI-M MLAs in Kerala will donate one month's salary, amounting to Rs. 50,000 each, to the CMDRF.

To coordinate global offers of assistance, the state government has established a 'Help for Wayanad Cell'. Joint Land Revenue Commissioner A Geetha IAS will oversee the coordination and management of these offers, focusing on land provision and house construction as part of the rehabilitation process.
