Karnataka Budget 2023-24 LIVE: When the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, presented the budget for the fiscal year 2023-24, he introduced a remarkable provision that has garnered attention. This provision entails the inclusion of life and accident insurance coverage of 4 lakh for e-commerce delivery personnel associated with renowned platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, and Amazon.

To ensure social security for gig workers in the unorganized sector, specifically those employed as full-time or part-time delivery personnel in e-commerce companies such as Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, and others, the government will provide insurance facilities totaling RS.4 lakh. This comprehensive coverage includes life insurance of Rs. 2 lakh and accidental insurance of Rs. 2 lakh. Notably, the government will bear the entire insurance premium cost, highlighting its commitment to the welfare of these workers.

This provision is a direct response to the persistent demand from the union representing gig workers. The Karnataka Budget acknowledges the concerns raised by these workers regarding the informal and uncertain nature of their employment. Recognizing the need to establish a social security net for this workforce, the government has taken this significant step to provide them with the necessary support and protection.

According to NITI Aayog, gig workers are individuals engaged in work that falls outside the conventional employer-employee arrangement. Understanding the unique challenges faced by this workforce, the government has proactively addressed their needs by offering crucial support and protection.

In a momentous event held at the state Vidhana Soudha, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah presented his 14th budget. The state government anticipates a total expenditure of Rs. 2,50,933 crores, with a capital expenditure of Rs. 54,374 crore and loan repayment of Rs. 22,441 crores.

During the budget presentation in the state assembly, CM Siddaramaiah highlighted that the government will provide an additional financial aid of Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 5,000 per month to each household, fulfilling the five poll guarantees outlined in the Congress party's manifesto. These guarantees, estimated to cost the exchequer approximately Rs. 52,000 crore annually, are expected to benefit around 1.3 crore families.
