Bhopal: In Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath has emerged as the Congress' chief ministerial face, according to party leader Randeep Surjewala. Mr. Nath, who has previously held the top post in the state, is currently serving as the president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, making him the natural face of the party.

Addressing reporters, Randeep Surjewala clarified that the president of the Pradesh Congress automatically becomes the face of the party in the state. This declaration comes as the Congress finalizes its candidates for the upcoming assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh during a Central Election Committee meeting.

Surjewala went on to highlight the political situation in Madhya Pradesh, criticizing Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's leadership. He cited rising crime against women and increasing corruption as key issues in the state, emphasizing the people's desire for change.

Regarding candidate selection, Surjewala mentioned that decisions on seat allocations would be made in a subsequent meeting. Kamal Nath, after the meeting, confirmed that discussions had taken place about several potential candidates but stressed that no final decisions had been reached yet. The party is currently deliberating over 130-140 seats.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who also participated in the meeting, noted that while extensive discussions occurred, not all details would be disclosed. He indicated that the candidate list would be released shortly.

The Congress screening committee had previously met on October 3 to begin deliberations on candidate selection for the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls. Madhya Pradesh is one of five states holding elections at the end of the year, with the legislative assembly terms concluding in January for Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, while Mizoram's term ends on December 17.
