Mumbai: Following the relief from pollution in Delhi due to rains, Mumbai faced similar environmental challenges. In response, the Bombay High Court has taken a significant step by reducing the time allowed for bursting crackers on Diwali from three to two hours. Justice DK Upadhyay emphasized the need to prevent Mumbai from facing the pollution crisis witnessed in Delhi.

The bench, comprising Justices Arif Doctor and DK Upadhyay, made this decision considering the air pollution situation. The initial permission to burst firecrackers from 7 pm to 10 pm was amended to 8 pm to 10 pm. The court stressed the importance of implementing strict measures to improve the city's air quality. The ban on vehicles carrying garbage and debris, initially imposed on November 6, has been upheld.

Post-November 19, the Municipal Corporation will decide whether to allow garbage trucks, and the court highlighted the necessity of expert opinions to study the causes and solutions to pollution. Advocate General Birendra Saraf assured the government's commitment to addressing the matter seriously.

The court attributed the recent improvement in air quality to rain, criticizing the government for not taking adequate steps in this direction. Advocate Milind Sathe, representing the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, reported issuing notices to 1065 out of 1623 construction sites for rule violations. The court, however, criticized the Municipal Corporation for attempting to portray everything positively and emphasized the need for an expert committee.

Expressing concerns over the manufacturing and sale of chemical firecrackers, the court called for monitoring. The hearing, pertaining to increasing pollution in Mumbai, is scheduled for December 11.
