AGARTALA:  On Monday, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, a Jharkhand High Court judge, took the oath of office to become the eighth Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Justice Singh was sworn in by Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya during a ceremony at the Raj Bhavan.

At the event for taking the oath ceremony, Chief Minister Manik Saha was joined by members of his cabinet, High Court justices, and key government and law enforcement officers. The President has selected Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, a judge of the Jharkhand High Court, to be the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court with effect from the date he assumes responsibility for his post, according to a notification issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on April 11.

The Supreme Court collegium, presided over by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, recommended Justice Singh for appointment as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court on February 7. Along with the fully functional High Courts of Meghalaya and Manipur, the Tripura High Court was established in March 2013. Except for Sikkim, all of the northeastern states were previously ruled by the Gauhati High Court.

The Department of Justice in the Law Ministry issued a notification saying that the President, under the powers conferred by Article 217 of the Indain Constitution, has appointed Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, who is a judge at the Jharkhand High Court, to assume the position of the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court with effect from the date he takes charge of the office.
