Infosys, a major player in the IT services sector, has introduced a new 'Power Programme' as part of its campus placement drive. This initiative is aimed at colleges and offers freshers a significantly higher salary compared to previous packages.

Under this new programme, Infosys is offering annual pay packages of Rs 9 lakh, which is a considerable increase from the earlier entry-level salaries of Rs 3-3.5 lakh. The focus of this hiring strategy includes rigorous testing in coding, software challenges, programming skills, and other specialized areas.

In the April to June quarter, Infosys experienced a reduction in its workforce by nearly 2,000 employees, bringing its total number of employees to 315,332.

This new initiative is similar to TCS’s hiring strategy, which aims to recruit around 40,000 freshers, maintaining the same level as last year. TCS offers three package categories: 'Ninja' at Rs 3.6 lakh, 'Digital' at Rs 7.5 lakh, and 'Prime' ranging from Rs 9-11 lakh. The 'Prime' programme, introduced last year, has since expanded to cover areas such as AI, generative AI, and machine learning.

The technology services sector in India, valued at $250 billion, has experienced a slowdown over the past year, leading many software exporters to downsize their workforce. In fiscal year 2024, the top five IT companies in India collectively reduced their workforce by over 70,000. However, the top four IT firms in India are projected to hire approximately 82,000 freshers in FY25, with HCLTech and Wipro each planning to recruit 10,000 and up to 12,000 freshers, respectively.
