The latest installment in Apple's flagship iPhone series is set to hit stores in September 2024, and fans are eagerly awaiting the new features and upgrades that the iPhone 16 will bring. While the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro are still fresh on the market, rumors are already circulating about what we can expect from the iPhone 16. Here's a comprehensive roundup of everything we know so far about the iPhone 16.

Design

The iPhone 16 will bring some notable design changes to the table, particularly for the Pro models. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature a larger 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max will boast an impressive 6.9-inch screen. These size upgrades will make the iPhone 16 Pro models the largest iPhones to date, and the first size increase since the iPhone 12 series.

Despite the larger screens, the iPhone 16 Pro models will retain the same overall design as their predecessors, with the same rounded edges and stainless steel frames. However, the camera bump on the back of the device will be slightly larger to accommodate the new vertical lens arrangement.

The standard iPhone 16 models will not see any size increases and will retain the same 6.1-inch display as the iPhone 15. However, they will feature a new vertical camera lens arrangement, which will allow for spatial video recording using the Ultrawide and Wide cameras.

Colors

The iPhone 16 will be available in a range of colors, including blue, pink, yellow, green, black, white, and purple. However, it's worth noting that Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the purple and yellow options may not make the final cut, and that the iPhone 16 will instead be available in black, green, pink, blue, and white.

The iPhone 16 will feature the same color-infused back glass as the iPhone 15, with a frosted effect that contrasts with the main frame color.

MagSafe

The MagSafe alignment magnets in the iPhone 16 will be slimmer than before, reducing the size of the magnetic ring required for MagSafe-compatible cases. This change will make it easier to find cases that fit the new iPhone, and will also reduce the overall bulk of the device.

Display Technology

The iPhone 16 OLED panels will use micro-lens technology for improved brightness and reduced power consumption. This technology uses a uniform pattern of billions of lenses inside the panel to reduce internal reflection, increasing perceived brightness without increasing power consumption.

The OLED displays used in the iPhone 16 will also be more power-efficient thanks to improved materials. Additionally, Apple is using Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology for some of the iPhone 16 models, which will result in slimmer bezel sizes. BRS allows for a more compact and efficient layout of the circuitry under the display, allowing for thinner bezels without impacting display performance.

Buttons

The iPhone 16 will feature two new buttons: the Action Button, which will replace the Mute Switch, and the Capture Button, which is entirely new. The Action Button was first introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro models and allows users to perform multiple functions, such as activating the Flashlight, turning on the Camera, launching a Shortcut, enabling or disabling a Focus mode, using Translate, turning on/off Silent Mode, and more.

The Capture Button is a new addition to the iPhone 16 and will be used for taking photos and videos. Located on the same side of the iPhone as the Power button, the Capture Button will allow users to zoom in and out by swiping left and right, focus with a light press, and activate a recording with a more forceful press.

A-Series Chips

The iPhone 16 will feature Apple's latest A-series chips, built on the latest N3E 3-nanometer node. While we don't yet know the specifics of what these chips will bring, we can expect improvements to efficiency and performance. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro could use different chips, with the higher-end chip limited to the Pro models.

Leaked technical information suggests that all four iPhone 16 models will use the same A18 chip, but Apple may still separate these into an A18 and an A18 Pro with some modules disabled or binned to differentiate between them.

Thermal Improvements

The iPhone 16 models will feature a new thermal design that will combat overheating. Apple is said to be working on a graphene thermal system for the iPhone 16 models, and the iPhone 16 Pro models may also include a metal battery casing that will improve heat dissipation. Graphene has higher thermal conductivity than the copper used in iPhone heat sinks, making it a more efficient material for heat dissipation.

RAM

The standard iPhone 16 models could be upgraded with 8GB of RAM, up from 6GB in the iPhone 15 models. This would see all four iPhone 16 models offering 8GB of RAM.
