Indian Railways is set to operate more than 7,290 special trains to ensure passengers can travel conveniently during the festive seasons of Diwali and Chhath. A recent announcement from the Ministry of Railways revealed that a total of 7,296 special trains have been arranged to meet the heightened demand from travelers.
Given the surge in passenger numbers during this festive period, Indian Railways is focusing on safety and minimizing potential incidents. The Railway Ministry emphasized, “Transporting people across India during Diwali and Chhath is a challenging task, but after successfully managing similar operations during Navratri and Durga Puja, Indian Railways is now fully prepared to help commuters reach their homes for the ongoing Diwali and the upcoming Chhath celebrations.”
Passengers are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or items on railway property to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) using the helpline number 139 and the RailMadad portal.
To ensure safe travel for millions of passengers, the RPF has implemented strict safety measures. They stated, “To ensure safe travel during this festive season, RPF has launched a comprehensive safety drive to reduce fire hazards and prevent accidents on the railway network.”
The awareness campaign led by the RPF, in collaboration with various partners, includes distributing informative leaflets, putting up eye-catching posters, performing street plays, and broadcasting public service announcements across multiple media channels.
Additionally, the ministry has initiated enhanced inspections of luggage and parcels, and is monitoring vendors and hawkers using portable stoves (sigris) to mitigate fire risks. These measures have been in effect since October 15.
The Railway Board's Information Department previously announced that special trains would operate from various locations nationwide, including Secunderabad, Ahmedabad, Kottayam, Ujjain, Bhopal, New Delhi, Nagpur, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. “On October 30, we are running 164 special trains to facilitate travel for Chhath and Diwali,” they noted.
To prepare for potential overcrowding, additional seating arrangements and resting areas have been established for passengers.
