BENGALURU: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), India's top institute for advanced research and education, will open a Postgraduate Medical School and a multi-specialty hospital on its Bengaluru campus, thanks to philanthropic support from two groups.

The IISc announced a partnership on Monday with benefactors Susmita and Subroto Bagchi, as well as Radha and N.S. Parthasarathy, who would donate a total of Rs 425 crore ($60 million) to the project, and the facility will be known as the Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital. The IISc has never received a larger single private grant.

The academic centrepiece of this initiative will be an integrated MD-PhD programme aimed at creating a new breed of physician-scientists who will pursue careers in clinical research to develop new treatments and healthcare solutions, driven by a bench-to-bedside philosophy, in line with global examples of integrating science, engineering, and medicine under a single institution. They will receive training at both the hospital and the scientific and engineering facilities at IISc.

The not-for-profit, 800-bed multi-specialty hospital, which will cater to the academic program's clinical training and research operations, will be a crucial enabler of this endeavour.
