The Indian Army conducted its military might in the 'Exercise Topchi' firepower demonstration held at Devlali in Maharashtra's Nashik. The event, aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, featured locally manufactured artillery equipment, including the K-9 Vajra, SP gun system, Dhanush, 105 mm Indian field gun (IFG), light field gun (LFG) systems, and Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers.

The K-9 Vajra, a 155 mm, 52-caliber tracked self-propelled artillery system, was a highlight of the demonstration. Constructed by Larsen & Toubro with technology from South Korean defense major Hanwha, it showcased India's self-sufficiency in defense capabilities. Another notable inclusion was the Dhanush, a 155 mm, 45-caliber towed artillery gun boasting a range of 36 km.

The "Exercise Topchi" emphasized the integrated use of firepower and surveillance assets, incorporating guns, mortars, rockets, drones, and aviation assets. In a previous event in December, President Droupadi Murmu visited Pokhran, witnessing a firepower exercise featuring intricate drills and maneuvers by various weapon platforms. The President lauded the troops for their commitment and preparedness to defend the nation.

During the same month, approval was granted for the procurement of 70,000 Sig Sauer assault rifles, providing a significant boost to the Indian Army's firepower. These rifles, valued at over Rs 800 crore, will be allocated to troops engaged in counterterrorism operations and other duties. The decision was reportedly made during a high-level meeting of the Defence Ministry, attended by top military officials.

This procurement is particularly crucial as the Indian forces face a military standoff with China and conduct extensive counterterrorism operations along the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir against Pakistan-sponsored terrorist activities. Already, over 70,000 of these assault rifles are in use by forces in the Ladakh sector along the China front and in the Kashmir valley.
