India is on track to become one of the top 10 performing nations in sports by 2047 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said Union Minister of Labour, Employment, and Youth Affairs & Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya. Speaking at the inauguration of the upgraded SAI Golf Course in Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram, he highlighted the progress being made in Indian sports.

Mandaviya emphasized the significance of the Trivandrum Golf Club as a symbol of sporting excellence and community engagement. He also mentioned that the Olympics 2036, if hosted in India, will further nurture and showcase the country’s sports talent.

"Under PM Modi's leadership, we are progressing towards making India a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047. To promote sports, we are taking steps like identifying grassroots talent, nurturing them, and providing top-notch coaching. Athletes are also being supported through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)," Mandaviya said.

He expressed pride in the establishment of Kerala's first National Golf Academy, which is equipped with a nine-hole international-standard golf course, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and modern recreational facilities. The Golf Course was established with approval from the Ministry of Tourism, and a fund of Rs. 9.27 crore was allocated for this project, completed by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

The minister also visited the upgraded course and played golf, marking the official opening. As part of the event, international athletes from SAI, Thiruvananthapuram, were felicitated.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports released the Draft National Sports Governance Bill 2024, inviting public comments. Mandaviya outlined plans for transforming sports governance in line with India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The Bill proposes the formation of a Sports Regulatory Board to oversee National Sports Federations (NSFs), focusing on ethical governance, athlete welfare, and financial standards. Athlete representation will be strengthened, with 10% of voting members in the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) being sportspersons of outstanding merit.

The Bill also introduces a "Safe Sports Policy" to protect athletes from harassment and abuse, along with the establishment of Ethics and Dispute Resolution Commissions. A Sports Tribunal will be created to resolve disputes efficiently, reducing reliance on civil courts.
