New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has staunchly defended India's decision to continue purchasing Russian oil despite facing criticism from Western nations over the matter. Speaking at a panel discussion during the Munich Security Conference, Jaishankar addressed concerns about India's balancing act between strengthening ties with the United States and maintaining trade relations with Russia.
In his characteristic straightforward manner, Jaishankar dismissed any notion of this being problematic, asserting, "Is that a problem, why should that be a problem? If I am smart enough to have multiple options, you should be admiring me." His response drew smiles from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Affairs Minister Annalena Baerbock, who were also part of the panel. Jaishankar emphasized that in today's interconnected world, it is unrealistic to expect countries to adhere to unidimensional relationships. These remarks come amidst Western disapproval of India's continued oil trade with Russia, particularly in light of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Jaishankar had previously defended India's stance by highlighting the disparity in oil purchases between Europe and India, emphasizing that India's monthly purchase of Russian oil is significantly less than Europe's daily intake.
Jaishankar reiterated India's clear position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, advocating for dialogue, diplomacy, and an immediate cessation of violence. Acknowledging the nuanced differences in India's relationships with the US and Russia, Jaishankar emphasized that India is not purely transactional in its approach. While India maintains strong ties with Western countries, it is also non-Western and seeks to engage deeply with both Western and non-Western nations.
In response to critics who attempt to label India as "anti-West," Jaishankar emphasized the importance of distinguishing between being non-Western and anti-Western. He highlighted India's strong and improving relations with Western countries while asserting its identity as a non-Western nation deeply engaged with global affairs.
