Hyderabad: Madhubabu Garlapati, a 31-year-old auto driver from Andhra Pradesh, is caught in a distressing saga of deception and illegal organ trafficking after being misled into selling his kidney for money.

Facing crippling debt from online loans, Madhubabu was desperate when he came across a Facebook advertisement offering a large sum for a kidney donation. The promise of ₹30 lakh seemed like a solution to his financial troubles, but it soon turned into a nightmare.

Madhubabu, a resident of Guntur, was connected with an agent named Basha from Vijayawada, who assured him of a smooth transaction. A woman from Vijayawada contacted him, sharing her own positive experience and how she had received the promised payment.

The surgery took place at Vijaya Super Speciality Hospital in Vijayawada, where Madhubabu was told that his kidney was urgently needed by a recipient. Before the operation, he even spoke with the recipient’s family, who paid for his travel and expenses, and assured him he would receive the full amount after the surgery.

Despite these promises, Madhubabu only received ₹50,000, a small fraction of the agreed sum.

"They exploited my financial difficulties, making me believe I was helping someone in need," Madhubabu told local authorities, recounting his ordeal.

"I agreed to the deal thinking the money would help repay my loans and provide a better future for my children," he added.

Investigations revealed that documents were forged to create a fake relationship between Madhubabu and the recipient’s family. The surgery, which removed Madhubabu’s right kidney instead of the agreed-upon left kidney, was allegedly performed by Dr. Sharath Babu, who is implicated in the illegal organ trade network.

In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Vijaya Super Speciality Hospital defended their actions, stating that the surgery was conducted based on legal documentation. "The hospital followed due process as per the law. Any allegations against our doctors are baseless and will be addressed through proper channels," the spokesperson asserted.
