Thiruvananthapuram: The Vizhinjam Port in Kerala marked a significant milestone on Thursday with the arrival of its first container ship, 'San Fernando.' This ship, capable of carrying 8,000 to 9,000 TEUs, began its journey from Xiamen Port in China. At Vizhinjam, it will unload approximately 2,000 containers and handle 400 containers using the port’s advanced services.

The 'San Fernando' departed from Sri Lanka and reached the port's outer area by 7 am on Thursday. A harbour pilot will guide the ship to the dock, with berthing expected around 9:15 am. Upon arrival, the ship will receive a ceremonial water salute from the large tug Ocean Prestige and the smaller Dolphin Series tugs 27, 28, and 35.

Once berthed, the 'San Fernando' will promptly start offloading its containers. After the inaugural ceremony on Friday, July 12, the ship will set sail for Colombo.

The arrival of the 'San Fernando' marks the beginning of trial operations for the Vizhinjam Port, Kerala’s ambitious project. The port is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, advanced automation, and IT systems, making it India’s first semi-automated port. Full commissioning of the port is anticipated by September or October 2024.

At an official event set for 10 AM on Friday at the port, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officially welcome the ship. The ceremony will also feature Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, along with other central and state ministers, dignitaries, officials, and public representatives.
