Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: Congress Faces Scrutiny Over Past Promises
Share:

The Haryana Assembly elections are fast approaching, with voting set for October 5 and counting on October 8. Congress is striving to regain power after a decade in the opposition, but its history of broken promises may impact its chances. Of the 90 assembly seats, Congress is contesting 89, leaving one seat in Bhiwani for CPI(M). The majority mark is 46 seats.

In Rajasthan, Congress's failure to fulfill its promise of waiving farmers' loans has been a notable issue. During an election rally in Pokhran on November 26, Rahul Gandhi had pledged that farmers' loans would be waived within ten days if Congress won the 2018 Assembly Elections. Despite forming the government, this promise remained unmet, contributing to the BJP's victory in 2023.

Unfulfilled Promises in Himachal Pradesh

A similar scenario unfolded in Himachal Pradesh. During the November 2022 Assembly elections, Congress made ten guarantees that helped them win. Priyanka Gandhi had promised employment for one lakh youth in the first cabinet meeting, but this pledge has not been fulfilled, even after Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's first cabinet meeting in January 2023.

Another unmet promise in Himachal was a monthly pension of Rs 1500 for women. With a female population of approximately 36.9 lakh out of 75 lakh, this was a significant commitment. Although Congress introduced the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojana, it had restrictions that limited its effectiveness.

Government employees in Himachal Pradesh have also faced issues regarding salaries and benefits. State Electricity Pensioners have protested for overdue payments, threatening to send their board cards to the Election Commission if payments were not made by December 31.

The BJP has also been active in Haryana's political landscape. Kanwaljit Ajrana from BJP declined to contest from Pehowa, while INLD-Halopa formed an alliance affecting various seats. JJP-ASP released their candidate list for Karnal, and Bhupinder Singh Hooda's net worth and legal cases have come under scrutiny.

In Kaithal, BJP's Lilaram Gurjar will face Congress' Aditya Surjewala, while Radaur features BJP's Shyam Singh Rana against Congress' Bishan Lal Saini. In Kalka, BJP has fielded Ambala Mayor Captain Abhimanyu against MLA Pradeep Chaudhary, who switched from INLD to Congress.

AAP has announced its fifth list of nine candidates for the Haryana elections. Meanwhile, Congress has accused BJP of dissolving the Haryana Assembly to obscure their lack of majority. Former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala highlighted internal rifts within Congress and growing public support for JJP.

As the elections draw near, all parties are maneuvering through promises and alliances to secure their positions in Haryana.
