Haldwani: Four days following the eruption of violence in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, resulting in six fatalities and 60 injuries, more than 300 Muslim families have opted to relocate from the Banbhoolpoora area to safer environs.

Due to transportation constraints amidst the imposed curfew, numerous families were observed traversing on foot with their belongings. The unrest ensued on February 8th subsequent to the demolition of an 'illegal' mosque and madrasa during an anti-encroachment operation in Banbhoolpoora.

In response to the turmoil, extensive search operations persist under the supervision of law enforcement. To date, authorities have apprehended 30 individuals linked to the violence, with several others remaining under scrutiny. Additionally, weapons have been seized from the possession of the arrested suspects by the Uttarakhand Police.

While curfew restrictions have been relaxed in various sectors of Haldwani by the Nainital district administration, the Banbhoolpoora locality remains subject to stringent curfew measures. Inhabitants are strictly advised to remain indoors, with enforcement actions threatened for non-compliance. Internet services have been reinstated in many parts of Haldwani, barring areas still under curfew.

As the exodus of Muslim families intensifies, all entry and exit points of Banbhoolpoora have been sealed by the district administration to prevent potential escape of rioters involved in the violence.

A delegation from Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind visited Haldwani on Sunday, engaging in discussions with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to convey their grievances. Following the meeting, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind's General Secretary Abdul Raziq criticized the hasty decision of the administration to demolish the mosque, attributing it to the escalation of tensions and subsequent violence.

Expressing concerns over the lack of prior judicial directives, Raziq emphasized the necessity for accountability regarding the abrupt demolition. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced plans to construct a police station at the site of the demolished mosque and madrasa.
