Produced by Academy Award winner Guneet Monga Kapoor, Anuja has been shortlisted in the Best Live-Action Short Film category. The film explores the critical issue of child labor in the garment industry and features actor Nagesh Bhonsle in a pivotal role.
This marks Guneet Monga's third Oscar nomination. Her earlier productions, The Elephant Whisperers and Period: End of Sentence, both clinched Oscars, bringing global recognition to Indian cinema.
Disappointment for 'Laapataa Ladies'
India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category, Laapataa Ladies, didn’t advance to the next round. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film starred Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan. Its plot centers on two newlywed brides who are mistakenly swapped during a train journey, leading to a series of chaotic events.

In addition to Anuja, another contender with Indian ties is Santosh, a British-Indian film directed by Sandhya Suri. The movie, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, follows a widow-turned-police constable tasked with solving the murder of a young girl. Starring Shahana Goswami in the titular role, Santosh is the United Kingdom's official Oscar entry and remains in the running for the Best International Feature Film category.
