Dehradun: The central government has given permission to the much-awaited Yamunotri Ropeway Project, stuck for more than a decade. District Tourism Officer Rahul Choubey said that the 3.7 km ropeway from Kharsali to Yamunotri would not only reduce the distance to the Himalayan temple but would also save the pilgrims, especially the elderly, from having to undertake an arduous journey of about 5 km.

Rahul Choubey further said that the villagers of Kharsali had given about 14,880 square yards (62 Nali) of land for the project. However, it could not be started due to constraints in the acquisition of forest land for the purpose. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has now transferred 3.8 hectares of land to the tourism department for the project. Yamunotri Dham is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. To reach Yamunotri Dham, which is counted among the 4 Dhams of the state, at present people have to reach Janki Jatti by road. After that, to reach Yamunotri Dham i.e. the temple, one has to climb about 5 kilometers on foot. Pilgrims have to face a lot of problems on this walking route. 

Due to the narrowness of the road, there is also a jam here. In view of all these problems, in the year 2006, a proposal was made to connect Yamunotri Dham with a ropeway, for which the tender was also issued by the tourism department in 2012, but due to lack of strong will of the government, even after 15 years, this ropeway was not completed. The project could not get permission. With the construction of a ropeway in this area, there will be a record inflow of passengers, which will benefit the businessmen associated with the Chardham Yatra, as well as increase the income of local hotels and businessmen. Let us tell you that not only the local people are waiting for the ropeway in Yamunotri, but also the common devotees of the country and abroad.
