PANAJI: The annual 61-day fishing ban in Goa will come into effect today, May 31 midnight. "The fishing ban is for 61 days, which will be lifted in August. During this period, mechanized fishing is banned along the coast and territorial waters of Goa, Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar said.

There are nearly  900  fishing trawlers in Goa, who have already started winding up operations. The fishing workers from trawlers were seen withdrawing the nets from the fishing boats, who leave for their hometowns during the ban season and return to Goa at the end of July to begin operations in August. The ban is imposed annually in the coastal state to facilitate sufficient time for fish breeding.

The annual fishing ban in Goa is implemented to protect and conserve the marine ecosystem and fish populations. The ban is enforced during the monsoon season, typically from June to August, which coincides with the breeding season of various fish species. During this time, fish lay their eggs and the young ones begin to grow, contributing to the replenishment of fish stocks.

The fishing ban aims to prevent overfishing and ensure the sustainable management of fish resources. It allows fish populations to reproduce and replenish their numbers without human interference. By giving marine life a chance to thrive, the fishing ban helps maintain the ecological balance in the coastal waters of Goa.

Additionally, the monsoon season in Goa is characterized by rough seas and strong winds, making fishing activities more hazardous. The ban also serves as a safety measure to protect the lives of fishermen by preventing them from venturing into the sea during potentially dangerous weather conditions.

The annual fishing ban is a regulatory measure implemented by the government of Goa in collaboration with local fishing communities and authorities responsible for fisheries management. It helps preserve the biodiversity and sustainability of the coastal ecosystem while safeguarding the livelihoods of fishermen in the long run.
