New Delhi: Former Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has targeted current President Mohamed Muizzu. Solih said that Muizzu's party PNC had described India as a threat to national security during last year's election campaign, but now they are pursuing agreements with India. Recently Muizzu returned from a five-day visit to India, where he praised India's financial assistance and support in times of crisis.

Muizzu, who is considered pro-China, had made several controversial statements on India as soon as he assumed the presidency in November. A few hours after taking oath, he asked India to withdraw its military personnel deployed in the Maldives. He also opposed the Indian projects going on in the Maldives. Solih criticized Muizzu, saying that now he is supporting the same India-Maldives initiatives which his party had opposed earlier. This includes the development of the port and dockyard at the Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) military base, expansion of Hanimaadhoo airport, and a plan to open an Indian consulate in Addu city in southern Maldives.

Solih also said that Muizzu and his party had opposed the construction of the Indian consulate in Addu, calling it a spying center of the Indian intelligence agency RAW, but now they are retracting their statement. It is worth noting that after Muizzu came to power, there was tension in the relationship between India and Maldives. Muizzu and some leaders of his party had made derogatory statements against India and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This led to a demand for boycott of Maldives on social media in India and many Indians expressed their displeasure. The opposition parties of Maldives also criticized the Muizzu government.
