Dehradun: Forest fires, which have been raging through most parts of Uttarakhand, showed signs of abating on Sunday as rain helped bring down the flames in many regions, including Dehradun. However, the fires continued to rage in Kumaon and Garhwal districts of the hill state.
Forest and fire department officials remain on high alert, working tirelessly to control the flames in Nainital, Bhimtal, Ranibagh, Jyolikot, Kotabag, and Betalghat regions. Yesterday, the fires reached Nainital, enveloping the hill town in smoke. The efforts to fight the fires were aided by Army helicopters that were pressed into service.
The rain on Saturday evening brought relief by extinguishing the fires in most regions of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun. However, the firefighting operations are still ongoing in Nainital, Bhimtal, Ranibagh, Jyolikot, Kotabag, and Betalghat regions. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted a review meeting on Saturday to discuss the forest fire situation in Nainital. He cancelled leaves of concerned officials and urged them to remain vigilant while efforts were underway to tackle the forest fires.
To aid in relief and rescue operations, two government vehicles were provided to each of the Nainital, Haldwani, and Ramnagar forest divisions. District officials have imposed a ban on the construction of houses and car washing until the situation is brought under control. Additionally, they are working to create awareness and educate people about the dangers of lighting garbage on fire.
