THIRUVANANDAPURAM: In a pioneering move, the Kerala government is set to introduce the 'Queer-Friendly' Hospital Initiative' in four districts, aimed at providing healthcare facilities and safeguarding the rights of transgenders and queers.

Health Minister Veena George conveyed the government's vision for an inclusive health system, where all individuals can access services irrespective of their gender identity. "This government is wholeheartedly dedicated to uplifting the transgender community," Minister Veena George stated. "We are taking a historic step by granting the transgender community a reservation in the nursing field."

The initiative, a first-of-its-kind, will be implemented in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kozhikode districts. Healthcare staff in these areas have already undergone training to create queer-friendly environments in general hospitals. The government plans to gradually extend this initiative to all healthcare institutions in Kerala.

To begin the efforts, the Transgender Community Link Worker (CLW) project has been initiated in the mentioned districts. Community link workers will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the transgender community and the healthcare system. These support workers will facilitate access to necessary healthcare services, considering the various barriers faced by transgender individuals in society. Their presence will ensure that those in need receive efficient guidance and care within hospitals.

The implementation of the 'Queer-Friendly Hospital Initiative' showcases Kerala's commitment to building an inclusive society. This program not only prioritizes providing essential healthcare but also upholds the rights and well-being of transgender and queer individuals, marking a significant milestone in history.
