With the Lok Sabha Election 2024 just around the corner, preparations are ramping up for the initial phase of voting scheduled for April 19th. In light of this, schools and colleges in various states and union territories across India will remain closed on that day to accommodate the voting process and prioritize the safety of students.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has unveiled the election timetable, with voting set to occur in seven phases. The voting dates are slated for April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1, with the vote count scheduled for June 4.
To facilitate the smooth conduct of the elections, schools and colleges serving as polling stations will be shut on the respective polling dates. This temporary closure enables the setup of voting booths and ensures an orderly voting procedure. Moreover, in areas deemed sensitive, schools and colleges may close a few days ahead of the election to safeguard student well-being.
The first phase of voting on April 19 will encompass 102 seats spread across 21 states and union territories. Below is a breakdown of the states and union territories where educational institutions will be closed on April 19th:
Andhra Pradesh: 2 seats, Assam: 5 seats, Bihar: 4 seats, Chhattisgarh: 1 seat, Madhya Pradesh: 6 seats, Maharashtra: 5 seats, Manipur: 2 seats, Meghalaya: 2 seats, Mizoram: 1 seat, Nagaland: 1 seat, Rajasthan: 12 seats, Sikkim: 1 seat, Tamil Nadu: 39 seats, Tripura: 1 seat, Uttar Pradesh: 8 seats, Uttarakhand: 5 seats, West Bengal: 3 seats, Andaman and Nicobar Islands: 1 seat, Jammu & Kashmir: 1 seat, Lakshadweep: 1 seat, Puducherry: 1 seat.
This proactive measure aims to ensure a seamless and secure voting process during the Lok Sabha Election 2024.
