NAGPUR, Maharashtra: A tragic explosion at an explosives-manufacturing factory near Nagpur has claimed the lives of at least five workers and left several others injured, Maharashtra police confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred at Chamundi Explosive Pvt Ltd in Dhamna village, located under the jurisdiction of Hingna police station, approximately 25 km from Nagpur. The blast took place around 1 pm local time when workers were reportedly involved in packing explosives, a local police official stated.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal provided details of the incident, saying, "At least 5 people have died and 5 people are injured in an explosion at an explosives manufacturing factory in Dhamna. The team is about to reach the spot."
Among the deceased, four were women, Commissioner Singal added, highlighting that the investigation into the incident is ongoing. "Our team, crime branch, and senior officers are present on the spot, and action is being taken," he assured.
Former Maharashtra Home Minister and NCP-SCP leader Anil Deshmukh arrived at the site of the incident and expressed concern over the manager and owner of the unit being absconding.
"This incident of the explosion took place in an explosive unit near the village Dhamna. The incident took place in the afternoon. The manager and owner of the unit are absconding. The injured have been sent to the hospital for treatment," Deshmukh informed reporters. "A team from the explosive department is here and further investigation is underway."
The tragic incident has cast a pall over the Dhamna village community, with authorities and local officials actively engaged in ensuring all necessary actions are taken promptly.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the explosion as efforts to treat the injured and support the affected families remain ongoing.
