New Delhi: On February 17th, Saturday, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher suggested that the Modi government should bypass Parliament and issue an ordinance to provide a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), a key demand of Punjab farmers currently stationed at the Shambhu and Khanauri points on the Punjab-Haryana border. This proposal emerged a day before the fourth round of talks between farm leaders and union ministries regarding various proposals.
Pandher emphasized the government's authority to make "political" decisions, urging for an ordinance to enact MSP laws immediately. He highlighted the six-month validity of ordinances, suggesting that the government could adopt the "C2 plus 50%" formula recommended by the Swaminathan Commission through such an ordinance. Notably, this formula factors in costs beyond A2, including family labor (FL).
Another prominent farmer leader, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, leading the "Delhi Chalo" agitation alongside Pandher, echoed the call for an ordinance, emphasizing its swift implementation. Dallewal dismissed concerns about the cost of providing MSP for all crops, urging the government to prioritize farmers over corporates. He stressed the need for supporting rural agro-based businesses and implementing MSP laws to ensure fair crop purchases nationwide.
The ongoing farmer agitation, organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, aims to secure various demands, including MSP legislation, implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations, pensions, debt waivers, and justice for victims of past violence. Despite earlier talks on February 8th, 12th, and 15th yielding no resolution, farmers continue their protest at Punjab-Haryana border crossings, pressing the government for action on their grievances.
