Guntur: In the midst of skyrocketing tomato prices, a farmer couple in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district achieved a remarkable feat by selling 40,000 boxes of tomatoes and earning an astounding Rs 3 crore within just 45 days.
Chandramouli, a tomato farmer with a 22-acre farming land, adopted innovative techniques like mulching and micro-irrigation to hasten the tomato yield, sowing a rare variety of tomato plant in early April. By implementing these advanced farming methods, he successfully obtained the tomato harvest by the end of June.
Choosing the Kolar market in Karnataka, close to his native place, Chandramouli sold his produce. During the last 45 days, the price of a 15 kg crate of tomatoes at the market ranged between Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500. Delighted with the surge in tomato prices, Chandramouli shared, "From the produce I got so far, I have earned Rs 4 crore. Overall, I had to invest Rs 1 crore in my 22 acres of land to get the yield, including commission and transportation charges. So, profits amount to Rs 3 crore."
On the other hand, Madanapalle, known for hosting one of India's largest tomato markets, witnessed an unprecedented spike in tomato prices. The per-kg price of first-grade tomatoes soared to a staggering Rs 200 on Friday (July 28). Traders flocked to the market in large numbers to purchase tomatoes, and the first-grade variety was reported to be exported to northern cities.
Two weeks ago, a crate of 25 kg tomatoes was priced at Rs 3,000, amounting to Rs 120 per kg. However, the surge in demand from other states has driven the price to an all-time high of Rs 200 per kg. Officials have indicated that the soaring tomato prices are expected to continue until the end of August.
